The following letter was just found a few years ago among the papers saved by Annie Greer Heaton's mother. Annie lives in Avery County and this is presented here with her permission.

Comments in [ ] are mine and are only for clarification. The letter was written by James [Jackson] Greer [born 14 Aug 1827] to his brothers. James was a son of Jesse and Mary/Polly Morris Greer. He was one of 17 children. James married Frances (Fanny) Greer, daughter of Isaac Newton and Nancy Norris Greer. You will find many families from Ashe, Watauga Counties, NC and Johnson County, TN moved to Pike and Floyd Counties, KY. Some moved back and forth several times.

I think the Bill Trivett mentioned in the letter is William H. Trivette born 1841, son of Owen and Docia (Dicy) Wilcox Trivett.

Mr Wm & Isaac Greer

Dear Brothers

:Your kind & welcome letter first at hand yesterday. Glad to hear from ;you once more in life. But sorry to hear of Wm. sickness. Found us all well as common. All the connection is well, except Monroe [James' son] & Carrie they are chilling. They came back in Dec. 1884 and live just below John Greers. Ethel Childress has a boy child six weeks old. There has been a great deal of murdering going on in the country lately. Though too tedious to mention only a few around here. John Flemmings was killed by McClell Adams. Three wks later McClell Adms was killed by Randolph Smallwood. Ran has surrendered up to the Criminal Court & has a trial tomorrow. Times are close & money scarce as hen's teeth. Though there is plenty to eat for the time of year. We have been having some of the coldest weather in the month of Feb. we have had this year. No deep snows this winter. The wheat is all killed by the severe freezes that has been this winter. If you came back I know you can get your old position as Mail carrier. I will send the letter to Billl Trivett soon & I guess he will write soon to you. Your wheet is not sold yet. You made a proposial to write every Month. I will stand up to it if you will. Most ever person has married since you left. Last week little Steaven Osborn married Ral? Robinson. Shade Osborn's Bud married Rutha Ray. I have saw Bill Trivett since I commenced writing. Says if you will come back you shall have your old position just as long as he has the contract. If you can get the money there off Isaac or any one else to bear your expenses on first. As soon as you get hear Bill Trivett and myself will register the money back to who ever you get it from. Bill Trivett says to tell you to come by the way of Catlettsburge, KY as it is the best rout for you. If Isaac moved to whare he said I will try to come see you. It is most too far for me whare you now live. I will close for this time by requesting you to write soon as you get this & I will answer promptly.

Monroe and Carrie sends there best respects to you both and would be very glad to see you and take ____ long talk with you And hear you tell of your ups & downs of this life. Come & see us. Be sure to write soon s you get this.

Monroe & Carrie
