"The 4th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment was one of many Southern Units which fought for the preservation of the Union during the Civil War. The 4th Regiment was composed primarily of men from the eastern mountains of Tennessee. Men for the regiment came from "Greene, Grainger, Carter, Johnson, Cocke and Washington Counties. The majority of men enrolled in Greene County.
.....The book Tennesseeans in the Civil War published in 1964 by the Tennessee Civil War Centennial Commission states that the 4th Tennessee Regiment was recruited in East Tennessee in the spring of 1863 and that seven Companies were mustered in at Nashville on June 15 1863."
Following is a listing of the soldiers who served in the 4th giving just the names rank company age (if given) and either place of enlistment place of birth or home. Those marked with an "*" indicate they died either from wounds or disease. Those marked with "+" denotes deserted. Those marked with "++" indicates they were reported as deserters and then returned to duty.
Other information is given in the book but this should be enough to get you started. Please note that Taylorsville, TN is now present day Mountain City, TN.
