Also lists the 17 children and their birthdates of Jesse Greer, Sr. and Mary/Polly Morris. Many other dates and names are here as well as an interesting story entitled "A Small Travail of Jesse Greer". A little point of interest: Mary/Polly Morris was 12 years old when she married, 13 when her first child was born and had her 17 children in 29 years - no multiple births. She died in 1880 and lived to see at least one GGGGrandchild - that's SIX generations!! She died before the 1880 Ashe Co., NC census was taken, but she was included in the Mortality Schedule. $6.00

Sharyn McCrumb, a best selling author, has written many books where the stories take place in Upper East Tennessee. I bought three of her books and stayed up all night reading "She Walks These Hills" copyright 1994 and published by Signet Books. This book has plots and subplots, one being about a man who escapes from the North East Correctional Facility in Johnson County and follows his attempt to get back home. Mountain City is mentioned throughout the book. Its easy reading and hard to put down. If you're interested you can buy the book at any good bookstore or ask for it at your library. I found it in the mystery section of the bookstore.

On Horseback, by Charles Dudley Warner, was written in the 1880s. It recounts riding a horse from Abingdon, VA thru Laurel Bloomery and Gentrys Creek. Warner was a neighbor of and co-wrote with Mark Twain. This short story is free on the Internet at the Gutenberg Project at this link.

Virginia Regimental History Series
